A confusing, controversial sculpture stands in Liverpool that is as loved as it is hated by the Liverpudlians. Designed by artist Taro Chiezo in 1998, Superlambbanana represents genetic engineering gone awry resulting in a cross between a lamb and a banana. The 8-ton, 17-foot sculpture is also a nod to Liverpool’s import and export trade. The statue has moved around the city, but has a semi-permanent home on Tithebarn Street, and has spawned several “lamb-sized” models decorated and placed around town in the fashion of Orlando, Florida’s lizards, Richmond, Virginia’s fish, San Francisco’s hearts, etc. If you decide to check it out, bring directions since asking for directions to it in some cases is asking for trouble..
